WHO WAS JOSÉ RIZAL?
José Rizal (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896) was a Filipino physician, writer, scholar, linguist, and reform advocate during Spanish colonial rule. He is widely recognized as the Philippine National Hero for awakening Filipino national consciousness through his writings and intellectual leadership.
Rather than advocating violent revolution, Rizal believed in reform through:
• Education
• Moral responsibility
• Civic participation
• Equality before the law
• National dignity
His novels exposed social injustice and helped define Filipino identity during a period of colonial oppression.
“The youth is the hope of our future.”
Rizal’s ideas continue to guide our work in New Jersey today.
